Sao Gabriel Intermodal Hub
Belo Horizonte, Brazil
OTC developed a concept design for an intermodal hub at the Northeast corner of Brazil’s third-biggest city, accommodating a metro station, new BRT terminus, local and regional buses, and a new intercity bus terminal, serving up to 500,00 passengers daily.
The new hub reconfigures the existing metro and bus facilities and integrates them into a single intermodal complex, featuring a wide mezzanine-level passenger concourse providing a high Level of Service for all transfer routes. Pedestrian and bike routes link the station to surrounding residential areas.
Following a careful analysis of the local road network and bus route structure, OTC proposed multiple options for arranging bus circulation, docking and staging around the hub, optimizing the use of the restricted site while minimizing costly changes to the surrounding infrastructure.
Safeguards were included for a future extension of the BRT route to the north, as well as potential commercial development over the BRT/local bus terminus area of the hub.
